Rooney : We deserved more from Saints match

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney felt the Reds were the better side and deserved to beat Southampton on Sunday despite falling to a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford. The Reds controlled most of the game, but fell behind midway through the second half after a goal from Saints substitute Dusan Tadic. Despite a late United onslaught in which Juan Mata had three opportunities to get his side back on level terms, the Reds could not find the elusive leveller. Speaking to MUTV and Sky Sports, Rooney expressed the view that the outcome could have been very different if the Reds had converted some good chances. “I think we deserved to win the game, but that's football," he said. "Overall we had the better chances and played the better football, but we were punished for not taking our chances. “I thought we stopped their threats for the majority of the game, but they had one chance in the second half and they took it,” he continued.  “We created three great chances late on and we had a few in the first half too. Southampton defended well but we were the better team and we feel we deserved more from the game.” Sunday’s defeat was United’s first in 12 games and Rooney feels the Reds need to regroup quickly and look ahead to Queens Park Rangers in next Saturday's away fixture. “Losing at Old Trafford is always disappointing, but we can’t think about what could have been. We have to move on and start our preparations for our next game.”More: United 0 Southampton 1 match report | Van Gaal disappointed
