City 1 United 0

It was United who had the earliest sight of goal, inside the opening 60 seconds, when Marcos Rojo jumped to meet a Di Maria free-kick and head goalwards. Joe Hart made the save but the flag was raised for offside.

The opening exchanges were fairly equal thereafter with both sides enjoying little spells of good possession. Aguero looked lively for City and it was he who forced David De Gea into his first save of the game on eight minutes when he created space to shoot from a tight angle. At the other end Januzaj could have done better when he was well found by van Persie’s knock-down but he dragged his effort wide.

Aguero continued to look menacing and soon after Rojo had done well to force him out wide for an effort off target, the Argentinian attacker set up Jesus Navas in the best move of the game thus far. Thankfully De Gea stood tall and beat Navas’ strike away. Seconds later Fernando found Aguero, free in the box, with a sublime pass but the striker’s half-volley was bravely blocked by De Gea as he raced from his goal.

De Gea might have been the busier of the two goalkeepers but the Reds looked comfortable. However, the game was turned on its head six minutes before the break
